Getting a Crib that is safe

Wow, you're going to have a baby!! When you find this out the whole family starts to scramble for a place for the baby to sleep. First of all let me state "Don't drag out Uncle Richard's baby bed from the attic!" It may be an heirloom but chances are it is not a safe place for your baby to sleep. The slats are probably too far apart and may have lead paint. Lets go for a new crib or one from a friend that was purchased a year or so ago.

The first place the baby can sleep is in a bassinet. This can be moved right next to your bed for easy feeding plus the baby will feel snuggled more so than in a baby crib. They are usually on rollers so you can take it from room to room. Be sure it is a sturdy one and is free of anything that can hurt the baby. These are good for the first few months then move the child into the crib.

The crib slats should not be more than 2 3/8" apart. Check for cutouts where your child could get its head or arm stuck.
Be sure and shake the crib to be sure it's sturdy and well made. Your child will be spending the first 2 to 3 years in that bed and there will be jumping, pulling up and bouncing around so you want that bed to hold up. The dropside must be 9" above the mattress support when down and when the top is up must be at least 26" above the support at its lowest position. Raise and lower the dropside to be sure it works well. There should be a couple of heights for the mattress support because you new baby can sleep higher in the bed at first and then later as they get older you can lower the mattress so the child can't fall out.

Your mattress should fit snugly into the crib. You should not be able to put two fingers between the side of the mattress and the crib. If you can the mattress is too small and the child could get their head stuck in there. Be sure the mattress and padding is nonflammable and hypoallergenic. If you use bumper pads be sure they fasten securely to the sides of the crib. Don't use bumper pads when your child gets really active. Be sure mattress sheets are well fit over the corners and fastened with crib sheet fasteners.

If you are worried about baby blankets covering your baby's head you might want to try what they call a baby-in-a-bag, or a baby sleeping bag or baby sleep sack. These are not only safer than a blanket but in the bag you child will remain covered not matter how much they move around.

Check nuts, bolts and screws periodically to be sure they are tight.

Never put your crib against a window especially if you have curtains or drapery cords. Cords and curtains can get wrapped around the baby's neck. Take all toys out of the crib before the child goes to sleep and be sure the child cannot grab anything around the crib.

Federal safety guidelines went into effect in 1973, but only since 1991 do most cribs meet all mandatory safety standards (16CFR part 1508) as set by The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the voluntary standards (ASTM F966 and F1169) as set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The Juvenile Products Manufacturers’ Association (JPMA) certifies cribs that meet the safety standards. For more information on crib safety and other nursery equipment, contact the Consumer Products Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772.
