Baby showers are thrown to honor new mothers and to help forgo some of the costs of beginning the life of a newborn. There are no real steadfast rules as to who should host the shower. Many showers are hosted by sisters, best friends or a group of friends. When planning a shower, you first need to decide what type of shower it will be.

Girls only shower
This is the most common type of baby shower. It is a great way for the girls to get together and exchange stories and tips on motherhood. These showers can be held just about anywhere, at anytime.

Couples shower
These are sometimes the funniest type of baby showers. Both moms and dads can get together and exchange baby information. It is a great way to socialize and introduce many of the friends and family that will be important in your baby's life. These can be great for cook-outs!

Family shower
Family showers can be a great way to bring family together to share in your special moment. If you throw one after the birth, it's an excellent way to show off the new bundle of joy to the entire family. Family is important but these showers can be a little hair raising.

The other question you will need to answer is when to have the shower. Most showers are held before the birth, but more and more they are being held after the birth.

If you are not going to announce the sex of your baby, it might be wise to have the shower afterwards. This way the appropriate gifts can be purchased. It also gives everyone an easy way to see the baby at one time.

If you hold the shower before the baby has come, you should start planning approximately four to weeks before the baby shower, depending on the number of guests and the budget involved. Try to have the shower early enough to avoid an early arrival!

Choosing a shower theme

You bet! Having a theme at your baby shower can add that grand touch and make it even more special. These are a few themes we have come up with:

Hawaiian Theme - Do we really need to explain his one? Have somebody bring a surfboard, it makes for great fun in the backyard.

Diaper Theme - One thing parents can always use! Have everyone bring a pack of diapers for all ages. See if you can get one husband to wear a diaper!

Couch Potato Shower - This one is great for the guys. Hold the shower during an important sporting event and let the men watch as the girls talk about babies. Serve the beer in baby bottles!!

Be sure and scatter a few of those disposable cameras around the shower location. You will get some great unexpected pictures!
